WHAT IS LASER SCAN?
At BIMCOTECH, we understand that laser scanning involves facilitating, enhancing, and streamlining the process of collecting existing measurements to obtain a simple and intuitive 3D model for any client.
The scanning itself involves the controlled direction of laser beams followed by distance measurement in each direction to capture millions of points in 360 degrees across three dimensions.
HOW IT WORKS?
For data capture, the scanner is strategically positioned to document specific elements and key areas for the study project.
With a laser pointer projecting in three dimensions and rotating in all directions, millions of points are collected to form the point cloud.
Additionally, the scanner takes photographs during the scanning process to obtain 360-degree images.
After data capture, the point cloud is processed, and its coordinates within the project are determined.
The point cloud provides a reliable 3D model of existing elements, from which BIM modeling is carried out using 3D software, allowing the delivery of CAD documentation (BIM model, 3D model, 2D plans, etc.).
TECHNOLOGY
BIMCOTECH utilizes FARO® and AUTODESK technology as a default, but we adapt to customer needs with other manufacturers for both hardware and software. FARO® has been dedicated to bringing excellence to the market for over 30 years. Through the innovation of its wide range of products, the landscape of 3D imaging has changed forever.
At BIMCOTECH, we work with the new ultra-portable FARO® laser scanners, FocusS 70, 150, and 350, which allow us to measure complex objects and buildings quickly, easily, and accurately. The intuitive touch screen of the FocusS models is now larger and offers greater clarity. The integrated 8-megapixel HDR camera easily captures detailed images while providing a natural color overlay to the scanned data in extreme lighting conditions. The FocusS laser scanner is truly mobile and scans quickly, safely, and reliably, giving us greater efficiency in our work.
AUTODESK is a global leader in BIM with software such as Revit, AutoCAD Plant3D, and Navisworks. BIMCOTECH has extensive experience in BIM modeling, training, company implementations, and project modeling management. At BIMCOTECH, we work with cutting-edge technological tools in the industry and combine real data capture with the team's expertise in 3D BIM modeling.
WHAT DO WE OBTAIN?
The scanning and data collection are done strategically to document specific elements and key areas for the study project.
After data capture, the image processing stage is necessary to obtain a point cloud with guarantees, as well as a model with 360-degree photographs that is entirely faithful to reality. BIMCOTECH has software that is fully compatible with any computer and delivers point clouds in simple and intuitive formats to facilitate customer use.
BIMCOTECH stands out for the quality guarantee of the obtained point clouds and for its speed, which adds real value to this technology by improving both the time and quality of manual measurement techniques.
POINT CLOUDS
The point cloud is created from millions of points positioned in three dimensions of space, entirely faithful to reality.
To obtain the point cloud, processing of the scans performed by the scanner is necessary. BIMCOTECH stands out from other companies in the sector due to the processing speed acquired through the team's extensive experience in numerous projects.
The point cloud provides significant advantages in all project phases: preliminary studies, planning, design, project review, and more.
BIMCOTECH has achieved delivering point clouds to the client in color without extending delivery times, providing the client with a feeling of being fully immersed in the project space from their office or workstation computer.
BIMCOTECH also offers support in familiarizing the client with the 3D viewer.
Orthoimages and 2D plans:
Orthoimages of the point cloud are two-dimensional captures delivered in image formats (bmp, jpg, etc.), eliminating the vanishing point of elements to facilitate 2D measurements. The orthoimage can also be delivered in CAD format for the client to add to their drafting team's documentation.
3D Model and Sections:
The point cloud itself constitutes a 3D model that can be accurately inserted into the project's BIM model. It provides 3D sections used in all sectors for measurements and deformation analysis. The 3D model from the point cloud consists of collecting solid elements that can be endowed, in the same model, with their numerical and text properties (tags, material, length, width, height, diameter, etc.).
Curved Surfaces:
By projecting millions of points, the point cloud can represent surfaces with all types of slopes or curvatures. This is why 3D scanning is increasingly used in ship hulls, topographic studies, and more.Deformation Maps: 3D scanning is very useful for collecting and processing data needed for deformation studies. Using specific software, the deformation map of an element or surface can be obtained from the point cloud.
WHY I NEED TO SCAN
After taking a stroll through our website, we hope you now recognize the advantages of precision, quality, and time and effort savings that the laser scanning we propose can provide in the field of measurement, which is necessary in any project, regardless of the sector and phase it may be in. But if not, we summarize the main advantages here:
Improved precision: The scanner has an accuracy of 2 mm at 70, 150, and 300 meters, depending on the range of the model used. Measurements taken by a person are always subject to human error, which, unfortunately, cannot be avoided. Especially for curved or sloping surfaces, the capture of measurements through the scanner becomes indispensable.
Improved quality: In addition to the accuracy of the collected data, BIMCOTECH provides the client with the 3D model in a user-friendly and highly intuitive format accessible to any worker, regardless of their role in the project.
Time savings: Surely one of the most precious assets in any project. How much time has been lost returning to the project site to measure a distance that the technician forgot? How much time have you spent traveling to the location where an intervention needs to be carried out, either to explain what needs to be done or simply to verify that an element is where you remember it? Imagine the time you would save having the entire area or building where your project is taking place in a user-friendly 3D format on your computer at your workstation. You can measure any distance or view the location of any element effortlessly.
WHAT IS THE POINT CLOUD USED FOR?
The point cloud, thanks to the millions of points captured by the scanner, provides an accuracy of 2 mm regarding the real location of any surface or element.
The point cloud allows exporting the capture to a 3D software format to integrate the current state of a space into the BIM model or to directly design the intervention in 3D (such as laying a pipe, building a wall, etc.).
I HAVE THE POINT CLOUD, AND NOW WHAT?
The point cloud is the element obtained after scanning and processing the captures.
It is necessary to correctly position the point cloud in the coordinates to fully integrate it into the BIM model.
From here, we can start adding information to the elements and begin the 3D modeling to proceed with the BIM project.
Return on Investment (ROI)
For BIMCOTECH, laser scanning and point cloud processing are a necessary step towards the BIM orientation of any space subject to new interventions.
We perform scanning in the shortest time possible, adapting to space conditions: scheduling when the fewest workers are present, selecting days when the area is cleaner and more elements can be captured, etc.
With this, you will see that the return on investment is completely justifiable with the savings in hours and can be fully attributed to the project.
